THE PILGRIMS WAY

The Pilgrims Way along the North Downs is famous for the journey undertaken by people from London to visit the Cathedral at Canterbury. Chaucer records some interesting tales of bygone adventures but the modern day walker is probably more interested in the stunning countryside through which it passes and the villages which have remained virtually unchanged since medieval times.

Timber Lodge is only a few minutes walk from Charing village which is probably one of the best examples of an overnight stop for Pilgrims with the Archbishops Palace playing host to both King Henry the VII and Henry VIII.

Walking the Pilgrims Way from Hollingbourne to Canterbury is very popular and many people find Timber Lodge a convenient place to rest overnight and explore the Pubs, Restaurants and other places of interest in the village.

A further facinating village to be found a few miles west of Charing is Lenham, with it's medeival market square and again many Shops, Pubs and Restarants to explore
.
A good "stop-off" point for lunch before continuing the walk to Charing.

Once a staging post where the Coaches would change horses on there journey from the chanel ports to London, Lenham has always maintained a lively mix of rural and commercial activity.

In medieval times there were five great Tithe Barns to store the taxes or Tithes, collected in kind, by the church from farmers in the parish. Only one remains today.

Charing and Lenham are the two villages closest to Timber Lodge Bed and Breakfast but there are many others with similar attractive architecture and history as the Pilgrims Way traces it's path to Canterbury. Timber Lodge is close to the A20 close to Maidstone and Ashford Kent
